Mindset Shifts That Turn Sweat Into Results
The barbell is the same every day, but some days it feels heavier and some lighter. The difference is often in the mindset that you have created. It’s in every step you take throughout the day, every rep in the gym, and every decision you make along the way. We all have self-doubt. And when that comes up, your progress can stall unless your growth mindset can answer back. Instead of “I’m not good enough,” you answer back with “I’m not there – yet,” and your momentum continues.
At Fit Augusta, I’ve watched members in their 20s and Legends in their 70s crush their goals by training their brains as hard as they train their legs and lungs. If you’re tired of feeling stuck, let’s talk about how your mindset can make all the difference.
Measure Relentlessly
It’s important to measure progress using data. We log every workout and weight you use so that we can help you understand your progress. Functional fitness is measurable and we take that to heart. We track your InBody log results so you can see the real trends.
View setbacks as opportunities
Jocko Willink has a saying, “Good!” It’s a way to put perspective into failure. These are opportunities to learn and grow from. Many of the challenges in my life have made me stronger and more resilient. As hard as they were, I can’t imagine where I would be without them. Learn to embrace the setbacks and hard times in your fitness journey and you’ll relish the successes more, and build your confidence in ways you never imagined.
Celebrate all the wins
Small wins come more often than big ones, and if we’re only focused on the big wins, we’re missing out on lots of opportunities. Dan Sullivan talks about this in his book, The Gap and The Gain, and how there is so much more winning in the gain. Think about the small milestones and victories along the way and enjoy them. They’re all building blocks that help you reach your big goals.
Find coaches that train mindset
Are you a person that can’t do a pull-up, or one that can’t do a pull-up yet? There’s an important distinction between these. If you’re working on getting your first pull-up, you’re poised for progress, not just resigned to the idea that you’ll never get there.
If you’re chasing aesthetics alone, you can find yourself in two traps:
- Never-ending Perfection. When we focus solely on appearance, how can we measure that? What happens in most of our brains is an endless pursuit of an ideal that we’ll never reach, and a body that may never be “good enough.” Functional fitness is about performance and can be measured in countless dimensions upon which we can declare victory every time we reach a milestone.
- Comparison Fatigue. First off, most of the ideal images you see in the media are augmented or embellished, so they’re not even real and nearly impossible to match. Growth mindset is about moving away from envy and toward execution. “What can I get better at today?” is a question that helps keep effort sustainable.
Fit Augusta builds mindset through goal reviews, tracking progress, and professionally coached sessions. Big box gyms boast row after row of expensive equipment, but we focus on connection and consistent feedback loops. You’re not lost in a crowd of people, you’re on a journey where the next step is clear.
