Aging gracefully has been a focus of mine for a while, and I’ve written about this before (Here, here, and here, to name a few). I’ve also been wearing a Whoop band for a long time, but they’ve recently added a feature that calculates your biological age, and I’ve become obsessed! I check it every week and have made a plan to drop my biological age further.
Biological age is an estimate of how fast or slow your body is aging compared to your actual, chronological age. Some weeks my Whoop estimates that I’m aging faster, and sometimes that I’m aging slower. The key thing to remember is that it is not exact, and truly just a calculation based on the available information it has (which is a lot!), but I’ve noticed that it does seem to lag when I have a bad week of sleep, and gets better when I’m hitting on all cylinders. If we dig into what affects your biological age, we can better understand the keys to aging gracefully.
The Science-Backed Shortcut to Aging Gracefully
Strength before everything
This is the most common thing I talk about with people, because it’s the most important. Functional muscle is precious in the currency of aging. Two to three lifting sessions per week is an important step in strengthening your bones and your body. It cushions your joints and slows down sarcopenia – the muscle loss that keeps you from aging gracefully. That’s why we focus so much on strength at Fit Augusta, because it’s one of the most important elements of a healthy (and longer) life.
Sweat smarter, not longer
Spending time in all five heart-rate zones adds to your life. This means that we need a variety of conditioning. High intensity training (zones four and five) is important because it floods the body with growth hormones and improves mitochondrial health. Low intensity training (zones 1-3) builds the aerobic “engine” that lets you go harder, recover faster, and stay injury-free. The beautiful thing is that we cover all of this in our programs, and is part of the CrossFit methodology of constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity.
Guard deep sleep like treasure
Chronic sleep debt accelerates aging, and proper sleep helps the rest of the strategies work harder. Getting 7-9 hours of sleep allows for higher heart rate variability (HRV) and better tissue repair. Focus on regular sleep patterns – consistent bed times and wake times – to give your body better recovery and get you on the path of aging gracefully.
Fuel recovery, not restriction
Large calorie deficits stress the body and rob you of muscle. A balanced plate of protein, colorful plants, and anti-inflammatory fats feeds repair pathways that keep you aging gracefully inside and out. We track the details if your fat loss and muscle gain on our InBody machine and our nutrition programs equip you with the guidance and accountability you need to be successful.
Move like life depends on it—because it does
Functional movements like squats, presses, and box step ups, are real world tasks that train your body to bend, twist, and lift without pain. Practicing a variety of these movements like these keep you moving confidently for a long time, which is the very definition of aging gracefully. Fortunately, we have functional movements baked in to every workout we do.
The common thread of all of these is that they reduce chronic inflammation and promote building lean muscle. These are things that, when neglected, can speed up the biological clock and take years away from you. When you master these, your functional longevity, the number of years that you can live independently, will expand. And you won’t have more years to live, you’ll have better years, too.
