We compare ourselves with others at every turn – how we look, our perceived social status, and, of course, our performance in activities like CrossFit.
We often talk about how one of the great things about CrossFit is that it’s universal scalable. This is what allows everyone to be able to do it. We can scale every movement to match the strength and skill level of every person. We can reduce the weight or modify the exercise so that you get that same workout as everyone else in the class, just in a slightly different way. But there’s something natural that happens with many of us. We compare ourselves with others in a negative way. We may feel like we’re in a competition with them. And when we can’t perform as well as they can, we get discouraged.
But the things is – we’re not in a competition. Other people in the class have no impact on us, because we’re there to train, not to compete.
The only person you’re competing with is yourself. It’s sounds like a worn out phrase, but it’s true.
It really is that simple. No one else in the class matters. If you feel like you can’t keep up with others, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is what YOU get from the workout. Are YOU getting stronger? Is YOUR conditioning improving. If you’re doing the workouts and giving it your all, you will improve.
Furthermore, one of the wonderful things about CrossFit Augusta is that the person working out next to you is actually pulling for you. We’re all in this together, and together we get stronger.
So it’s actually the opposite of competition. It’s a collaborative effort to become fitter, healthier, and happier.
It’s the new you vs the old you. That’s it. It doesn’t matter how you compare to anyone else.
